[...] Tonight I had taken care of the birds and was standing in the coop watching them. It was dusk and they were quiet and starting to roost for the night. Then all of a sudden Cora flew off the top perch of the roost straight for my arm, which is where I’ve let her perch in the past. She misjudged her landing by a few inches and scrabbled at me with her claws. So now my left arm looks like I’ve been in a bear fight, but I have no doubt of my chicken’s affection. I guess a scratched and smarting arm is what I get for saving her life! [...]

Hi, Jennifer! Thanks for saying hi and sharing your positive hen story! A chicken attack is a horrible thing to manage but you must have been a great nurse.

I added Cora and her husband Calabrese to the flock last Friday night. Thus far all is well. Stay tuned for an upcoming post detailing the transition.

I had the same - very same - injury to a U'uncle when we moved a month ago. All was well in the henhouse, however I am not sure if they were not liking her using the nest or what, and she had a similar headwound. If she did make it, I will tell you that our girl DID in fact make it, I pulled her out, made a makeshift bandage for her head (she looked like she was wearing a helmet) and used a lot of Triple Antibiotic with Benzocaine. I didn't think she was going to make it. she's been in the house in a Huge Rubbermaid "isolation' cage to heal, however this week her feathers are starting to grow out of the scarred skin. If she did hang in, I would love to hear if you added her back to the house....I have not yet, too afraid....I never heard of the dark side either until I found her - it's sad, but a real reality

That's too bad...I hope she makes it. We've now had chickens (Barred Rock Plymouths and Rhode Island Reds) for the past four years. I've seen the dark side as well. They can be mean as a snake to one another and are definitely cannibalistic. The good thing I can say is that, at this stage, ours are in their prime in laying large brown eggs...
