Hi, Joe,

Thanks for your note.

My floors are a mix of "character-grade" red and white oak. The boards have knots and lots of visible grain. I was going for a very subtly limed look, so I believe my flooring contractor applied a bit of the white and then the natural oils. The floors are the same treatment throughout the entire house.

I have to say that although the floors are beautiful, the limed effect didn't seem to last very long and now they don't display much of the white staining except in lower-traffic areas. Also, I am pretty disappointed with how the finish has held up--though it's entirely possible that durability is all in the application. I had a pretty reputable contractor, though...I was told that the magic oil finish was tough enough that it was used in restaurants...but after two years of living with it I notice that it stains much more easily than I was expecting. Good thing I am okay with a rustic look!

If you have any more questions, let me know!

Hi there! I came across your site after searching for "magic oil". Your place is beautiful and I was struck by the beauty of your floors especially the room with the blue walls. Do you know what type of wood that is? Also do you know how this coloration was produced? Magic oil has a white color and also a natural or clear. I'd really lie to try and reproduce it on my floors.

All the best,
